In conclusion, Communicator for Mac 2011 is essentially a “there is a Mac client” answer for Microsoft Lync, ported from another application. It’s targeted at filling the holes where an organisation may have a team of creative/alternative users on Macs that need a client other than Lync Web App to. Regarding “Whereas Lync (Skype for business) in MAC doesn't work until i give app password”, do you mean you can log into the Lync for Mac with the app password instead of the work or school account password? From my experience, the Lync for Mac client doesn’t support MFA app passwords. Lync for Mac sadly has no separate audio setup controls and relies on the Mac default sound preferences. Muting of iTunes, etc would also be a useful feature. RCC controls and USB pairing is also a limitation of various vendors for devices like the CX700 or Aastra 6725ip. Lync on the mac is a strong reminder that MS regards the mac as 2nd tier in corporate climates, or otherwise doesn't dedicate the approrpriate development resources to polishing products for the platform, IMO. – zwerdlds May 3 '12 at 20:33.

The Lync 2011 client for Mac needs to be manually reconfigured to reconnect.


  1. Start Lync for Mac.
  2. Enter your email address, user ID, and password.
The client will appear to cycle and eventually, will show an error notice:
To configure additional options for connecting to Lync Online, click Advanced (at the bottom).
You can configure the following options:
    • Manual Configuration: Select this option if automatic configuration is failing, and specify the following values:
      • Internal server name: sipdir.online.lync.com:443
      • External server name: sipdir.online.lync.com:443
    • Kerberos authentication: Leave this option cleared. Office 365 uses the Windows Azure AD authentication system for authentication.

    Click 'OK'


Returning to the login, ensure that your User ID has your complete MyUNL username, including the '@unl.edu'. Click 'Sign in' and you will login to the system.
